About
Margaret’s my name, colors my game. I’m not ashamed to admit I’m addicted to color. Lucky for me it’s legal! I began commercially in 1968 as a wholesale candle maker. I learned by experience how colors mix and for six years sold thousands of multi-colored candles.
In 1976, I returned to college at the University of Oregon, Eugene. I was lucky enough to have a great colorist, Robert Kostka, for a basic design teacher. He helped me take my intuitive and acquired knowledge about color mixing and put labels on that knowledge.
By this time I had moved out of wax and into fibers / weaving. In 1976, I went to the local weaving shop and tried to buy yarn for a particular project. The colors weren’t available in yarn, so I bought white and started dyeing my own yarns.
In 1988, I received a MFA from the University of Oregon (weaving emphasis) and was dyeing all my own yarns; silk for art, mohair for craft.
In 1995, I began selling woven scarves, shawls and wall hangings at the Portland Saturday Market and selected craft shows. Each weekend while booth sitting, I would knit berets to match the scarves I had for sale. Of course, the berets sold well.
A friend convinced me to buy a knitting machine and I did, selling many caps and hats. Then, nine years ago, a strange thing started to occur. Women began approaching my booth saying, “Oohh I love your colors but I can knit it myself.” My Momma didn’t raise a fool, so I began bringing my handdyed yarns to the market with me, and now the yarn outsells the caps, hats, and scarves. I now sell exclusively at the Astoria Fiber Arts Academy, and the Oregon Country Fair.
My customers have convinced me they’d buy more yarn if I had a web page, so here it is! I hope you’ll enjoy my colorful world and visit often to see what’s new!
